Companies that want to grow and prosper need to have a far-reaching vision to anticipate changes in the commercial environment and move in the direction of market trends. However, not all changes can be predicted so far in advance: this is the case with the outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, in which many companies did not even have time to prepare for its effects. Put this way, this study seeks to evaluate the concept of the business environment and the impacts caused by this worldwide pandemic, verifying, based on an exploratory survey with the owners of commercial establishments in the food sector in Araraquara / SP, how they are dealing with with this period of uncertainty and what transformations have been made in their businesses due to social isolation and the laws imposed on trade to continue operating. What can be seen from this study is that companies that wish to continue and prosper, whether in this pandemic period or in the future, need to know how to adapt more quickly to changes and have, in their planning, a diversification of resources and options in order to relate to their audiences both in person and remotely
