One of the problems caused by the use of fossil fuels is the emission of gases in the atmosphere, for example, carbon dioxide (CO2). Nowadays, the emission of this gas has been the subject of many congresses and the search for renewable and clean energy increases each year. Ethanol is a clean and sustainable source of energy that can replace fossil fuels. The Brazilian government signed the Paris Agreement and proposed to increase the ethanol production in 66% by 2030. To make it happen, it is necessary to increase the planting of sugar cane, which causes big issues. One of the alternatives is the production of second generation ethanol (E2G), which makes it possible to increase the ethanol production in 50% using the same amount of sugar cane planted. It is obtained by processing bagasse and the sugar cane straw. However, the bagasse and the sugar cane straw can be used for the production of electricity. A positive point is that, for many people, the production of E2G will be viable up by 2020. The difficulty found in the production of E2G which makes it expensive is the enzyme used in the pre-treatment. In order to make this process cheaper, Brazilian Government should be made more investments in research and development (R&D), encouraging other laboratories to produce the enzyme. In this way, the present work allowed to analyze the viability of the production of second generation ethanol (E2G), when compared to the production of first generation ethanol (E1G) and cogeneration from sugarcane bagasse.
