Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly relevant role in contemporary society, being applied in various contexts, from industrial automation to data analysis for decision making. However, its use also presents challenges, especially when it comes to the dissemination of news in the digital age. In this scenario, the speed and reach of information amplified by social networks and the internet can result in the uncontrolled propagation of information, often without veracity. This work aims to critically address the role of AI in the circulation of information and the creation of fake news. To this end, various approaches were explored, including a literature review, analysis of case studies, and application of qualitative research methodologies. A theoretical review of AI and its use in the propagation of content, the social and ethical impacts of the spread of fake news, and finally, mitigation and regulatory strategies are addressed. In this sense, the objective is to provide insights to understand and face the challenges of information dissemination in the digital age, thus contributing to a more informed, conscious, and resilient society. Guiding research questions include the impact of AI programs on news publication and the creation of deceptive propaganda, the main social, political, and ethical impacts of this phenomenon, and effective strategies to mitigate its negative effects.
