In recent years, family farming has reached great relevance in Brazil, however, for a long time this segment was ignored by several public policies aimed at the agricultural sector, which became known as conservative modernization, promoting the marginalization of small producers and creating different social and environmental impacts in the rural environment. Among the actions developed are the creation of the National Program for Strengthening Agriculture (PRONAF) and the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA). With the appearance of the Family Agriculture Law, guidelines were established for the formulation of the National Family Agriculture Policy. There is no doubt that this segment has great relevance for food and nutritional security, along with sustainable development and the generation of jobs and income, it is true that the difficulties faced and the characteristics intrinsic to family farming demand public policies that make these small productive enterprises viable. This article aims to analyze Brazilian public policies aimed at family farming, taking into account a historical context, by means of a bibliographic survey on the subject, raising the difficulties that still need to be overcome.
